During one of the recent sales at Spotlight, I bought some velvet in the aquamarine colour for making cushion covers!

I was planning on using the same tutorial that I had followed on one of my previous posts, for a cover for my other cushion. This other tutorial also uses the same method.

Unfortunately, after I started the first few steps, I realised that the other cushion cover I had made, was probably not the same kind of fabric/velvet that I had bought this time! My previous one was quite sturdy; this velvet was slipping as I sewed (I found out they call it creeping)!

I decided to research again, and ended up seam ripping my stitches.

I ended up following this tutorial. It was perfect, because the measurements of my cushions were also 16" x 16"! As it uses the envelope method, it also worked better as I only had one zipper that was long enough; the colour didn't even complement well with my velvet material. Lockdown had just started again too, and shops are closed so I'm not getting any long zippers anytime soon~

Things to take note of while working with velvet

- Nap direction: I cut the pieces accordingly to how I wanted the nap direction to be down for both front and back pieces

- Creeping fabric: Many of the information said to hand baste so that the fabric doesn't slip, but a comment by Mechelle Stewart on this video describes how she uses a stapler within the seam allowance! :D This hack worked perfectly! :D

What else was done

- lowered the upper thread tension

- used the walking foot (oops I was using the quilting one and didn't change it back to the normal one)

- 80/12 needle

Wheee! Comfy and nice to touch! :D
